Miltoun House Group

We have been operating since 1989 and for many years have sustained a five star rating and “excellent” comments from independent inspectors. We are however continuously looking at ways to improve and to develop the physical environment, the ways in which we deliver our service and the provision that we offer.

About Miltoun House Group

Miltoun House was established in September 1989 by Jane & Roger Dexter-Smith. Jane had until then been working as a psychiatric social worker. Roger was a senior engineer.

Jane’s work prior to opening Miltoun House had involved her in supporting clients from the long stay wards in the local psychiatric hospital to move into the community. She had however become disillusioned by the frequency of clients returning to the wards when community placements failed and decided that she could do something to improve the situation. She resigned from her job and “took the plunge”!

More recently Jane and Roger have stepped back from the business (although not entirely!) and their daughters Beth Davies and Sarah Dexter-Smith have joined them as directors.  The close relationship between the family and other members of staff continues and is part of what is special about the organisation as a place to live or work.

Miltoun House was established and over time has been reconfigured and extended such that it now provides seventeen single rooms.  The other properties were added to the organisation as the need arose and the client group has been widened to meet the needs of those with any combination of mental illness, learning disabilities and autism. Development of the properties is continuous and we maintain a high standard of the environment.  Residents contribute to tihs process and we want everyone who lives and works in the homes to be proud of their homes.

Consultation with residents, family and friends, staff and external agencies is instrumental in leading our thinking. We pride ourselves in the fact that we have a number of residents and staff who have been with us for the whole “journey” and staff turnover is normally only generated by retirement or staff moving on to further education and career development.
